About 4 years ago an employee stole the programs I bought from High Touch-High Tech and the programs I wrote myself. When I found out what she was doing I contacted an attorney and asked what could be done to stop her. The answer was "very little". She had been carefully planning this along with her husband who I had also hired, and any legal action involved getting clients involved. Not a good business decision, as you can imagine.
All these years later I still ask myself one question. The question is not "Why did they do it?" There were signs of character deficit and manipulation all along that I should have read. The question is, "Why did the principals and teachers, who knew what they had done, allow them in their schools?" Did they believe that ethical behavior in their personal lives does not transfer over to the world of business? Were they just "conned" as I was by this person and wanted to believe it was "all right" because this was a person known to them? I'm still not sure. What I do know is that it is the students who really have been robbed. The Science Place programs are far superior and continue to be recognized by professional educators for their excellence. Each year we have grown and gotten better, both in our programs and the professionals who teach them. Teachers tell me and write about it all the time.
What I do know is that the world is the place we make it. Our decisions count and what we do is what we will eventually get back. In the most difficult of times, which these have been, we can still make moral decisions that are our real legacy to our children.
I wish you all a very happy and healthy (in body and spirit) 2011.
